Before & After - T.O.M.S Place Market Hall

The Market Hall is the heart of T.O.M.S Place, the shared office space we created in Brunswick.

We called it The Market Hall because it was originally designed in 1930 to be a market place, and has served as a purveyor of goods throughout its history. Stall markings and roller doors could be found throughout this open space which today serves as the main communal and break-out area for T.O.M.S Place tenants.

The Market Hall was surrounded by a mezzanine level which was unused because it was mostly inaccessible. We added in two staircases from this main area to increase the usable footprint.

Our aim was to have minimal interference with original building, emphasise the mint green heritage trusses and the robust character of building. We sanded back the existing timber floor to expose a more neutral colour and removed the yellow paint from the brickwork.

Offices surround The Market Hall are glazed to provide a connection between the communal space and individual offices to enhance the community feel.

The talented folk of Jinx Studio (of which Victoria, our Creative Director is half of) brought The Market Hall to life with a beautiful fruit-inspired mural.

Looking down from the mezzanine over The Market Hall as we were still working on the space. Today, ivy has grown almost half the way up the planter box dividers we designed and had custom-made to create some screening between The Market Hall and offices.

It’s a sign. Gives us a little chuckle each time new people see it and smile. We had to have a neon sign. Our beauty was made by Electric Confetti.

The styling speaks to the vintage theme running throughout T.O.M.S, with mostly second hand or vintage furniture with mid-century modern vibes. Lots of little details and surprises can be found, like a fabulous 1930’s cash register that still works (no cash kept on premises, sorry).

Like a market hall - our aim was for it to be an engaging place where people gather. All the furniture is moveable, allowing people to make the space just right for themselves or to make room for events of up to 100 people. There are a variety of seating options to suit people at that time - whether it be private space for quiet work, a small casual chat or collaboration.

The ‘Chat Hut’ is one of our favourite custom-made pieces. It’s a great little spot for lunch or a casual meeting. We designed it to be wheels so it can be moved around. Not a bad place for a little sneaky nap too.
